Three Georgian houses on Ashcombe Terrace, Bath

Rooms

Fifty-eight rooms, four shapes

The three houses were never built to match, and a hundred and fifty years of partition walls didn’t help, so we’ve sorted the rooms into four loose groups.

  • A Georgian bedroom with a curtained four-poster bed, a marble fireplace and a tall sash window with heavy drapes

    The Lansdown Double

    Sash-window double

On the second floor of the south house, with a sash window over the terrace and a four-poster that has been there longer than any of us. The shutters still work, which matters in June when it’s light by half past four. There’s a deep cast-iron bath and a separate shower.

  • The Kelston Garden Room

    Ground floor, onto the garden

At the back of the north house, with a tall window over the walled garden and a door onto the path. These are the quietest rooms we have, since the garden soaks up whatever the city does after dark. There are two of them, both with the painted paper the 1930s owners put up.

  • The Widcombe Attic

    Top floor, under the slates

The top floor was servants' rooms and then storage, and was rebuilt as five white rooms in 1998. The ceilings slope, each room has a skylight and a dormer window, and the view is over the rooftops. Anyone over about six foot two should find the beam before the second night. The bathroom has a shower only.

  • The Beaufort

First floor of the north house

The big one, with a four-poster hung in the original floral fabric, a marble chimneypiece, working shutters and a bath long enough to lie down in. It’s on the first floor of the north house, at the far end of the landing from the gaming floor.

The same in every room

  • A bath or a good shower, and usually both.
  • Cotton sheets, two pillow weights, a blanket in the wardrobe.
  • Wired and wireless internet that works on the upper floors as well, which took some doing through three feet of stone.
  • A kettle, loose tea and a tin of something from the kitchen.
  • There is no minibar; the Morning Room is one flight away and keeps better hours.

Check-in is from two in the afternoon and check-out by eleven. Rooms are held through reception, since this website has no booking engine and takes no payment. Write to [email protected] or telephone +44 1225 486 390 and a person will answer.

Two of the ground-floor rooms in the north house are step-free from the pavement. The attic rooms can’t be reached by lift, and we’ll tell you so when you ask about them.
